Orange County Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
Our greatest concern is that you have all the information you need before you make any decision about cosmetic surgery. We’ve come up with a list of questions that patients ask most often about the procedures we offer. Contact us if you have other questions about breast lifts (mastopexy).
What is a breast lift?
Breast lifts are also known as mastopexy. It is a surgical procedure that raises the breasts by tightening the surrounding tissue. Removing excess skin is usually the preferred way to reshape and support the new breast contour. Over time, the areola enlarges and may lose natural and aesthetic positioning. A breast lift will solve these problems as well as rejuvenate your figure with a breast profile that is more youthful and uplifted.
When would I need a breast lift?
Breasts change over time. As you go through different phases of life, they lose their youthful shape and firmness. Pregnancy, weight gain and loss, gravity and breast feeding all take their toll on your breasts. Changes may accelerate as skin loses elasticity as you age. Breast lift can also reduce the size of an enlarged areola (the dark skin around the nipple). A breast lift may be done in conjunction with a breast augmentation if your breasts are small, underdeveloped or have lost volume due to pregnancy.
How do breast lifts compare with other cosmetic surgical procedures?
According to recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lifts have grown in popularity since 2000. This procedure is outpacing other surgical procedures by a margin of 2-to-1.
What is the breast lift procedure?
Your surgeon will examine your breasts and determine the best course of action. Your surgeon will show you the higher position where nipple and areola will be moved. Incisions are made to follow the natural contours of the breast. These incisions will vary with the amount of excess breast skin that is removed from the lower part of the breasts. The nipple and areola are lifted to their new higher position along with the underlying breast tissue. The skin above the nipple is moved to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast its new contour and improved firmness. Surgeons at AesthetiCare Cosmetic Surgery Institute have the highest level of technical expertise in reshaping and restoring fullness to breasts with minimal scarring.
Are there alternative procedures for breast lifts?
Another surgical approach for women with small breasts or minimal sagging involves removing a doughnut shaped ring of skin around the areola. The circular incisions are closed with a “drawstring” suture. If your surgeon is placing an implant together with your breast lift, it is placed in a pocket beneath the breast tissue or under the breast muscle.
What can I expect to experience after surgery?
You will be sore for a few days after your breast lift surgery. The degree of discomfort may depend on whether implants (if any) are placed under the breast tissue or under the breast muscle. Any discomfort can be controlled by pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Will there be any physical symptoms after breast surgery?
Swelling and bruising of the breasts is normal and will begin to subside in a week or so. The incisions are placed to keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible and will become barely noticeable after several months. You may have a reduction in sensitivity around your nipples or some numbness near the incision after surgery. These symptoms usually disappear with time.
Will I have to wear a bra or other special garments after surgery?
Many patients may need to wear a bra, ace bandage or other garment to help place the implants correctly immediately after surgery. Your surgeon will advise you as to when you can resume wearing your regular bra.
