What is breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction mammoplasty (also ‘mammaplasty’) is a reconstructive surgical procedure to reduce the size of very large breasts. Breast reduction surgery is often done to relieve physical discomfort rather than for cosmetic reasons. Surgery isn’t performed in younger women until the breasts are fully developed (usually by age 18) and the patient is mature enough to understand the procedure and expectations. Breast reduction surgery may interfere with future plans to breast feed.
What can breast reduction surgery do for me?
Women with very large breasts are often plagued with back and neck pain, skin irritation and bra strap grooving. Exercising can be uncomfortable. Overly heavy, sagging breasts can be greatly improved with breast reduction surgery. Your surgeons at AesthetiCare have helped hundreds of women to achieve better self- image and live a healthy and active lifestyle after having breast reduction surgery.
What are the reasons women give for getting breast reduction surgery?
Women consider breast reduction surgery for all kinds of reasons. Breast reduction surgery can help improve the quality of life, especially if you have very large breasts, experience discomfort, and physical limitations. For some women, breast reduction means ending years of rude, derogatory remarks made by some men towards women with large oversized breasts. Belittling and crude remarks can hurt self-esteem and make women feel self-conscious about their appearance.
What happens during breast reduction surgery?
Your surgeon will measure and mark your breasts prior to surgery. Horizontal and vertical incisions are made to follow the natural contours of the breast. Excess skin, glandular tissue and fat are removed. The nipple and areola are moved, without removing them, to a new and higher position. The skin above the nipple is brought down to form the new contour of the breast. If the breasts are extremely large, the nipple may be detached and moved into a higher position, but this is very rare.
What can I expect to experience after surgery?
You will be sore for a few days after your breast lift surgery. You should plan to take it easy for a couple of weeks and avoid lifting anything heavy for a month. Any discomfort can be controlled by pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.
Will there be any physical symptoms after breast surgery?
Swelling and bruising of the breasts is normal and will begin to subside in a week or so. The incisions are placed to keep the scars as inconspicuous as possible and will become barely noticeable after several months. There may be a reduction in sensitivity around your nipples or some numbness near the incision after surgery. Numbness in the nipples and breast skin may be permanent in some patients.
Will I have to wear a bra or other special garments after surgery?
Many patients may need to wear a bra, ace bandage or other garment to help place the implants correctly immediately after surgery. A good support bra should be worn at all times while your incisions heal. Your surgeon will advise you as to when you can resume wearing your regular bra.
What are the lasting effects of breast reduction surgery?
It may take a while for you to adjust to your new shape. But, with the new figure comes a renewed self-confidence and increased self-esteem. Gone are the physical and emotional discomforts of large breasts. Your body will have better proportions and clothes will fit better.
